In this episode, I interviews Allyn Rose, a breast cancer advocate, motivational speaker, IVF mom and advocate, author and content creator.
Allyn’s story and how she has approached the good and bad in her life are a testament to the power of conviction and self-belief. In this conversation, we talked about Allyn’s journey from being a contestant on a beauty peagent to making this life altering decision of removing her breasts and all the challenges that came along. We learn from Allyn how to maintain a healthy perspective around your appearance especially if you don’t quite like what you see in the mirror and how to not let it dictate any of the choices you make in life. We also talk about how to protect yourself against external negativity as you share pieces of yourself on the internet, creating online personas and not letting any of it overshadow the work that you do, and so much more.
As a 24-year-old Miss America contestant, Allyn made headlines across the globe with the controversial decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy after losing her mother, grandmother and great aunt to breast cancer. Determined to encourage other women to know that their scars are beautiful, Allyn boldly became the first woman with a mastectomy to model for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. Allyn is the founder of The Previvor, a 501(c)(3) non profit women's health platform, which serves as a resource for women undergoing mastectomy. She is also the creator of the #SelfExamGram, a social media movement teaching women the proper way to perform a monthly self breast exam. Allyn continues to work as an advocate and contributor on several national media outlets.
